read the description of each workshops carefully in the following pages and
then fill in your first and second choices on the
Workshop Registration Form.
Please keep a copy and send this form when you send in your Conference Registration Form.
Workshop Tool Lists On receipt of your registration form you will be sent a list of the tools, materials etc. that are required for your workshops. If you are travelling and require a marble tooling surface, skiving glass, stitching clamp or any other heavy equipment or tools, please notify Cherryl so that these can be made available for you to use during the workshops.
Cancellation The organisers reserve the right to cancel a workshop due to unforeseen circumstances. You will then be transferred to your second workshop choice. You will be notified immediately should this occur.

LORAINE TINNISWOOD (AUSTRALIA)

Loraine has tutored workshops at International Conferences (Brisbane & New Zealand); for the Leather Guilds of Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia; Dunedin (N.Z.) Leather Group; and T.A.F.E. Adult Education Courses. Loraine was the founder, Inaugural President, and is a Life Member of the Leathercrafters Association of Queensland Inc. Loraine has always shared her knowledge of leather, and over the years has given short classes/demonstrations for Schools, Guides, Scouts, Brownies, Churches, Libraries and Community Groups.
In 1996 she was Guest Speaker with Slide Presentation at Waalwijk, in Holland.
'COMMEDIA DEL ARTE' MASKS

‘Commedia
del Arte' Masks - used in risqué, ad libbed, Italian, Street Theatre.
Make a wearable Mask using the traditional Italian methods for these
street theatre masks.
The masks are compressed onto wooden moulds using a cow horn hammer. This method allows you to mould into hollows (eye sockets and wrinkles) - and over bumps (eyebrows, noses and cheeks) - no stretching is used.
The leather takes on all the characteristics of the wooden mould. Loraine will discuss how to make your own wooden moulds. Loraine over many years has explored many different techniques of moulding, achieving fantastic results.

PENDANT OR KEYRING - Uniquely Australian

LORAINE TINNISWOOD (AUSTRALIA)
Turn your small off cuts of light weight vegetable tanned leathers into beautiful pieces of leather jewellery with a precious stone inlay.
You will learn how to inlay a piece of Zebra Rock into Kangaroo leather to make a uniquely Australian Pendant or Key Ring. Zebra Rock is only found in the Kimberley area of Western Australia, the Kangaroo is a native animal unique to Australia.
This technique can be applied to many other projects. Extra pieces of Zebra Rock, other Rocks, Key Ring and Pendant Fittings will be available for purchase from the tutor.
This is a fun workshop for the beginner and advanced student. No previous experience is necessary to attend this workshop. Kit will include all materials for one Pendant or one Key Ring.

JOY & JOHN TONKIN (AUSTRALIA)
John commenced binding in the mid seventies and studied in Ascona, Switzerland, and in Paris. Joy is a graduate of the University of Canberra in paper conservation and has studied in Ascona, Switzerland. Both exhibit nationally and internationally.
Workshops: All the techniques proposed are relatively simple to execute. No previous knowledge of bookbinding is required.
Materials and notes will be supplied. Students will be required to bring a basic tool kit. Which will be advised.
NOTEBOOK WITH LEATHER TIE

The notebook technique is similar to binding techniques used in early books. The notebook is covered with leather and features exposed sewing on the spine.

MEDIEVAL BINDING
1-DAY WORKSHOP - MATERIAL COST $ 40.00

The binding has a limp or flexible cover. The text is sewn onto leather tapes which are wound around the textblock into the leather cover. Materials and notes will be supplied.

CLEAN - CUT SIMPLIFIED BINDING
2-DAY WORKSHOP - MATERIAL COST $ 40.00

The Simplified Binding was developed in Paris in the nineteen eighties as an alternative to the traditional French binding. The name is somewhat misleading as it can be a fine binding technique.
The book will be made with headbands, a hollow back spine, leather on the back and decorated papers on the boards which will be clean-cut. Participants will be introduced to paring of leather and chamfering of boards.
DROP - SIDED BOX
2-DAY WORKSHOP - MATERIAL COST $ 40.00

The drop-sided box is a very versatile box which can be used to house books or other precious items. In this workshop the drop-sided box will be made using leather on the case, Japanese papers on the side walls, and suede on the inside trays.
