SADDLERY SKILLS
6-DAY WORKSHOP - MATERIAL COST $ 120.00
PETER CASTLES (AUSTRALIA)
This
workshop will explore the skills required to commence in the trade or for
part time saddlery repairs - from novice to skilled workers.
Peter has worked for many years making and repairing the traditional Australian Stock Saddle, starting the trade in 1973, at the old firm of C.A. Stephan, Sandgate Rd, Albion, Brisbane. He was fortunate to work under the tutelage of Mr Bert Wildermuth, one of the finest saddlemakers Australia has seen. Bert started at Butler Bros. in Brisbane in 1926, working under Tom Cox, an old English saddlemaker. Bert said he was the neatest tradesman he ever saw. Bert went on to design the "True To Label" Wieneke's at Butlers in the early 30's. The information that Peter will share with you comes from hundreds of years of saddle making, as past down from man to boy, in a long line of tradesmen. Only traditional methods were used at C.A.S, and Peter still practices those methods to this day.
The course will cater to the abilities of individual students, and in saddle repairing could cover small repairs, such as replacing girth straps, patching knee pads, repair stitching, half flaps, etc. Felt linings may be ok too.
Peter would like to talk to each student before the course, so that he knows what you expect. He will then be able to advise yea or nay, as to whether we have enough time to do the work in hand. You may be asked to source special materials such as saddle felt, types of leather, etc. You are encouraged to bring your own tools and materials, the more the merrier.
Contact Peter by phone on 0416 614 214, or 07 46384835 AH. He will be only too happy to talk to you. Projects that students could choose to make over the course are as follows; headstall, bridle, quart pot pouch, saddle bag, pouches, stockman’s breastplate etc. Time will be a constraint, so students will need to think hard about what they want to make.
Peter is very tool oriented, so there will be a lot of information on this subject.
Desired outcomes over the six days
Peter believes the main thrust of course is the imparting of knowledge, of teaching process, so that the student will be able to work with confidence in his/ her abilities to make and repair articles in leather with style and professionalism. He looks forward to meeting with you to discuss your requirements.
